CJ Major Application/Admission Information

Incoming Freshmen/First Year Students

Admission Requirements and Advising

Criminal Justice Studies has a selective admission procedure that requires a student to be in good academic standing and have 30 semester hours of college credit completed before applying. In addition to the 30-hour requirement, prospective Criminal Justice majors must have completed the following four courses with no grade lower than a “C.”   The average of those four classes (weighted equally) must be at least a 2.5.  Applicants must have at least five (5) semesters remaining at UGA (including term of application and term of internship).

POLS 1101 - American Government

PSYC 1101 - Elementary Psychology

SOCI 1101 - Introductory Sociology

STAT 2000 - Elementary Statistics

Incoming freshmen  interested in criminal justice are enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences and are advised there until the term following acceptance into the program. Students complete much of the CORE requirements (math, science, English, etc.) for their AB degree prior to application. The term following admission, criminal justice students advise within the program. The advisor's office is located in 221D Baldwin Hall. While applying to the program, students should continue to advise with their current department, but also are encouraged to meet with the CJSP advisor informally. Please see the section on Advising on this web site for more detailed information. Should a problem arise regarding course selection and pending admission, the A&S advisor may consult with the CJ advisor and/or director to resolve the matter.

Applications for a major in criminal justice, along with a sealed transcript are due by the midpoint of each term. Application forms are available in the program office. Requests for transcripts should be made through the UGA Records Office in the Academic Building. Notification of admission to the Program is typically sent out within 10 days of the application deadline.
